I decided to go ahead and begin the comments about the book. I hope you enjoyed it. Leave your ideas about any great summer reads for our next book. I'll draw for the bag soon!

I was pleasantly surprised by the book. Based on reading Girl with a Pearl Earring I was not expecting such a lite read and it was just what I needed. Though overall, not on the tops of my list. I give it about 3-4 stars out of 5.

I must say, I really did not think I was going to get into it. At some point I think I read a handful of 'period' books in a row. Since then I have been avoiding these types of books from burnout. Well, I can't really put my finger on it, but I really enjoyed the story. I found myself really looking forward to my train rides so I could get back to the story. I think Maggie was my favorite character and I was really pulling for her throughout the story. While it was a period book, the story really could have been set in any time. I guess, maybe that was it, I could related even though it is set over 200 years ago. I did not feel booged down by the details of the time. Something else that struck me was the bit of story that related to the war, it rang familiar with divides our current war is experiencing. OK, well the angry mobs aren't going door to door these days but there are some divides going on.

I can not say I loved this book. I was engulfed by Girl with a Pearl Earring, but this book lacked spark. Although I enjoyed the references to Philip Astley and William Blake, this period book didn't have charisma or chemistry , as the characters seemed very young and immature. I just hate that I didn't pick a "page-turner" for our first book/. Next?

While I enjoyed reading the book just like I do any book, I also did not find it to be overly compelling. I did enjoy getting lost in it though, taking me back to a time I do enjoy reading about.

I did like Girl with a Pearl Earring better but I thought that the characters were developed well. I also enjoyed the references to war and compared it to that of our own.

I am looking forward to our next book. Any thoughts as to what it will be?

I hope everyone will agree on this next book: The Big House by George Howe Colt...full of surprises, a family memoir, a brief history of the cape, a study of class and a look at privileges past. A good book to say hello to summer...

The Big House looks like a great choice for summer. Just went on eBay to buy it and someone in town is selling it, how perfect!
